The CPD Process Safety Management (PSM) course develops essential knowledge of process safety principles, major accident prevention and effective risk management in high-hazard industries.
Process safety plays a critical role in preventing catastrophic events such as fires, explosions, toxic releases, equipment failures and uncontrolled process conditions. Unlike conventional occupational safety, which focuses mainly on individual workplace injuries, process safety addresses the integrity of industrial systems and the prevention of major accidents.
The programme covers process safety leadership, process risk management, operational controls, asset integrity, fire and explosion prevention and emergency preparedness. It is relevant to professionals in oil and gas, petrochemicals, chemical manufacturing, petroleum refining, pharmaceuticals and other process-intensive industries.
On completion, participants should be able to:
Describe the purpose and key elements of Process Safety Management systems in high-hazard operations.
Identify management responsibilities, accountability and the importance of a positive process safety culture.
Understand the methods used to identify hazards, assess major accident risks and establish controls.
Describe risk assessment, hazard analysis and systematic approaches to risk reduction.
Recognise the role of inspection, preventive maintenance and safety-critical equipment management.
Understand operating procedures, permit-to-work, management of change, and plant start-up and shutdown.
Identify causes of industrial fires, explosions and hazardous releases, and the measures that prevent them.
Explain emergency response planning, incident management and communication during major incidents.

The proposed 15-hour programme comprises 11 hours of listed modules and a 2-hour final examination. The remaining programme time and learning activities require confirmation.
A final assessment is proposed to evaluate participants' understanding of Process Safety Management principles across all four modules.
